Summary of July Events

Summary of July Events
Last month, we successfully held four major interactive live sessions across different locations in London.
July has been particularly a busy month for our members of staff. Engaging with local communities is core to our operation, at Horizon we believe fostering children is a service that affects our society and social responsibility.
So, what were the events?
We had four events, all in different locations across London. Here’s a quick summary of the dates and locations of these events:
- 9th July 2022 – Upper Mall L3, Galleria Outlet Shopping, Comet Way Hatfield Herts AL10 OXR
- 16th July 2022 – Outside Greggs South Mall at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre 62 Smythe Close London N9 OTZ
- 23rd July 2022 – 14 Palace Gardens Shopping Centre Enfield EN2 6SN
- 30th July 2022 – Nags Head Centre, Holloway, London N7 6PZ
All these events ran from 10 am until 5 pm, during this time we had conversations with individuals, couples and families about fostering, the role of foster carers and how to become a foster carer. Some people shared personal experiences of being in care or previous foster care experience. Others acknowledged and praised staff on the important work they were doing.
Online sessions
All four events had complimentary live online sessions. Our members of staff were also open to one-on-one online sessions with members of the public who could not make it to these locations.
We wanted to capture as wide an audience as possible.
What happened?
We wanted to engage and increase people’s awareness of the need for foster carers.
What better way to do this than reaching out to prospective foster carers? This is why we arranged to hold information events in the community, to promote the role of a foster carer and the needs of children in care.
Many people visited our stand and had their questions answered and we were able to dispel some of the well-known myths associated with fostering.
We also gave away free Horizon informational booklets about fostering.
Community response
Frankly, these events exposed the informational gaps that we have about fostering services. Some people did not know they would receive a weekly fostering allowance. A few people did not realize they could foster as a single applicant.
Points to remember:
- Most people can apply to become foster carers.
- The process of fostering isn’t complex.
- You will get a lot of support so that you can care for a child to the best of your ability.
- You do not need to have a big income to be a foster carer.
