What is Kinship Foster Care?

Do you know who a kinship foster carer is? How about the types of kinship arrangements and their legal obligations? Find out important details that every carer in kinship foster care should know.
Fostering is a noble service that provides a homely environment for children or young people who would otherwise be living outside the normal family environment.

Can you foster your relative’s children?

Essentially, that’s all about kinship foster care. You take the responsibility of the child’s birth parents.
1990674848

Defining kinship foster care

Kinship foster care is an out-of-home arrangement that allows you to care for a child with whom you have a family relationship. You could be a close or distant relative of the child that needs foster care.

Types of kinship foster arrangement

We have different kinds of kinship arrangements as discussed here:

Informal arrangement

This is a private arrangement between you and the parents of the child. It is important to note that this kind of arrangement does not have recognition by the court and jurisdiction.

Formal

In formal arrangements, the court system will recognise the foster care arrangements. There are two types here i.e. a formal arrangement that is only recognised by the court system with no payment made by the system and a formal arrangement that is through a foster care agency where payments are offered.

Therefore, you must establish the kind of kinship foster care that you want depending on various factors like financial needs.

Common reasons for kinship foster care

The reasons for kinship foster care are similar to those of any other type of foster care. Here are the top reasons why a child may be in need of foster care:

  • The birth parents are unable to offer a proper home life for the child
  • The child’s birth parents are subjecting the child to domestic violence or any other form of abuse
  • The birth parents are experiencing drug-related issues
  • The birth parents are in jail
  • The birth parents are unable to care for the child because of mental health issues or any intellectual disability that may hinder proper care for the child.

What are the Roles and Responsibilities of a Foster Carer?

As a foster carer, you don’t just provide a safe home for a child; you also have various roles and responsibilities.  Do you know your roles and responsibilities as a foster carer? Understanding these roles will help you figure out the best way of becoming a good foster carer.

The decision to become a foster carer requires a bit of knowledge about fostering services. Luckily, we’ve made fostering easier for anyone who wants to become a foster carer.

We share highlights of your roles and responsibilities as a foster carer. Also included are valuable tips that will help you undertake these roles and responsibilities diligently.

Who can become a foster carer?

You must be at least 21 years of age to become a foster carer with our agency. This is because the roles and responsibilities of foster carers are demanding and only settled adults can manage. Settling doesn’t mean that you must be married; it simply means that you must have a stable homely environment to accommodate the foster child.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Foster Carer

Your roles and responsibilities

Once you have agreed to become a foster carer, the UK government expects you to fulfil a wide range of roles and responsibilities as highlighted on the website.
Here are full explanations of these roles:

Providing a safe home for the child

The primary reason why the foster child is with you is that he/she needs a homely environment. The child needs you to provide a safe home for their individual success.
How do you define a safe home? There’s no perfect definition but such a home should offer the child a feeling of stability and security. In addition, they need a separate bedroom that they can call theirs.

Provide love and support

The child coming to your family may have had a traumatising experience. Love, care, and constant support are needed for the child to settle and grow maturely in a strange home. Don’t make the child feel isolated as a foster child.
Responsibilities of a Foster Carer

Attend to their education needs

The government is strict on children’s education. As such, you have a responsibility to ensure that the child’s education needs are attended to. Show honest interest in their education and follow up with their teachers should you have concerns.

Attend to their health needs

You will also need to ensure that the foster child can access medical care. They should not miss any medical appointments that they have with doctors. You should also observe their general healthcare and well-being while at home.
Through informal chats with the child, you can tell if they have unseen medical problems. This crucial information should be passed on to the relevant bodies for further action.

Managing behaviour

The negative past experiences of the child may influence them to have challenging behaviour. This calls for your intervention as a foster carer to manage their behavioural issues. We’ll share basic information on handling behavioural issues.
We recommend you use a patient and nurturing approach when handling behavioural issues. Otherwise, if you feel that you cannot handle the child’s behaviour, please contact us as soon as possible and our social worker who will work with you on strategies to manage the behaviours.

Attend meetings as part of a team

Fostering a child doesn’t mean that you will raise the child alone. There is a team that is dedicated to supporting the child. Every team member has a unique role in the upbringing of the child.
Therefore, you should attend the meetings regularly to help shape the future of the child. Always let us know if you cannot attend a meeting so that we reschedule them early enough.
Roles of a Foster Carer

Keep records

You also need to write and keep records of the child’s development. This information is important because it is used beyond your fostering period to influence the child’s further development.

Summary

Your roles and responsibilities as a foster carer require commitment. Luckily, you are not alone in this journey; we will be with you along the way.

If you need further training as a foster carer that will help you understand your roles better, you can always reach out to us.

What to Do with Foster Children

Are you worried that you and your foster child are not engaged enough? Well, we have exciting things that you can do to bond with a foster child under your care.

Giving them attention

Even before we start looking at the activities that you can do with a foster child, you should first know that attention is what they require from you.
Children enjoy when adults give them attention because it builds their sense of belonging and approval. Whatever you do, ensure that the foster child feels appreciated through constant attention.
What to Do with Foster Children

Exciting activities to bond with a foster child

Reading together

Reading together with a child is a great way to bond no matter their age. Most children crave one-on-one attention from adults, thus, reading provides this opportunity.
Depending on the age of the child, you can use varied reading strategies. For example, if they are young, you can read stories to them as you ask them questions. If they are old enough to read, you can read in turns.
It is important that you choose the right books that you will read together with the child. They should be age-appropriate. This will also go a long way to improving their reading habits, which will boost their learning experience.

Cook and eat together

Have you ever considered cooking together with a foster child? This is a brilliant way to bond and share a meal with the child.
While doing this, you will also be imparting important life skills related to cooking and sharing a meal as a family.
Fostering Lambeth

Child one to one’s

As a way of keeping the foster child closer, you can schedule routine child one to one. These special dates should be planned and provide a safe way for the child to feel appreciated. While on these one to one with the child, you should discuss positive items about the child.
It is also important that you choose different venues for the events so that they don’t look like routine meetings. Child one to one’s could also allow the child to express their inner feelings about people around him/her.

Shopping together

Children love shopping, thus you can make your foster child happier by taking him/her shopping. Instead of just giving them money to go buy stuff, you should accompany them. It will create a special bond and allow you to have a social experience with the child.

Play card games or puzzles together

Don’t limit your interaction with the child in formal settings, you can also play games with him/her. A few suggested games include card games, puzzles, or even play station.
You might have to compromise a bit and find a game that the child loves for you to play together. It can also be interesting if you teach them a new interactive game.
All these are great ideas that you can use to engage a foster child. Remember, this list is never enough; you can add more exciting activities that you want. Depending on the foster child’s liking, you can add activities like swimming, skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, etc.
Foster Children

What to avoid

However, you should avoid activities that are not age-appropriate for the child. In addition, ensure that the child does not engage in an activity that is deemed to be unsafe. This can be quite challenging for new foster carers. This is why you should conduct risk assessments before engaging in some outfield activities.

Final thoughts

We’ve shared a mixture of activities for indoor and outdoor experiences. You should choose appropriate activities that match your home setting.
You can also contact us if you are unsure about the age-appropriateness of the activities that you want to do with your foster child.

Can You Foster with a Criminal Record?

Foster care is a delicate matter that has strict eligibility criteria, with a criminal record as one of the considerations. So, we’ll discuss the prospects of fostering with a criminal record to see how possible it is.

A past criminal record is a crucial piece of information that could determine your suitability to become a foster carer in the UK. Of course, your background criminal records will be checked, and depending on the specifics of the crime, a decision will be made.

Criminal Record?

Can you foster with a criminal record?

Back to the question, and a clear answer from us is a conditional yes.
You can foster with a criminal record if the type of criminal offence you committed wasn’t related to safeguarding. There is also consideration as to how long ago the offences took place. During the assessment stage, social workers will assess if your criminal offence poses risks to children and young people.

Types of criminal offence that bar you from fostering

The following examples of criminal offences will bar you from becoming a foster carer in the UK:

– Offences against children

– Sexual offences

– Violent crimes

Background check

As part of the requirements, we conduct a background check, which includes the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Every household member in your family above 18 will be subjected to the DBS check.
If you have a criminal record that you would want to discuss with us prior to your application, please talk to us. We will help you to understand your eligibility based on the criminal offence. After all, the DBS check will reveal it anyway, so, it is better to have a heads-up on it with us through a friendly discussion.
In addition to the DBS check, you will also undergo a health check and several home visits before your application is approved.
However, strive to make the application process as smooth as it can be for anyone intending to become a foster carer.

Can I foster?

In summary, you can foster even with a criminal record, provided that the criminal offence committed previously doesn’t hinder your association with children.
If you are a kind and loving person, nothing should deter you from helping unfortunate children who need care and love in a family setup.

Is Foster Care Allowance Taxable?

A foster carer in the United Kingdom is entitled to a weekly allowance to cater to the needs of the child. Is this allowance a taxable benefit? Learn about it here today!
c16f1b8a-31be-4516-bd26-a1fe9f6b7bae

What is foster care allowance?

A foster care allowance is a weekly payment to a foster carer to cover the cost of caring for a child. The allowance varies depending on various factors like age and needs of the child, location, and the experience of the foster carer.
The expected minimum weekly allowance ranges between £137 and £240. However, this could go up if your circumstances require more allowance.

Will your allowance be taxed?

The foster care allowance that you receive is not subject to Income Tax. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about paying taxes for the money you have received to care for foster children.

However, it doesn’t just end there – you will need to calculate your tax threshold to determine if you have gone overboard or you are within the limits. You will be liable to pay tax if you have gone over it because it will be termed as taxable profit.

Factors that determine whether you will pay tax or not

Firstly, we’ve stated that generally foster care allowance isn’t taxable. We’ve also mentioned that you could pay tax if your tax threshold is surpassed. With these two pieces of information, here are the factors that determine whether or not you will pay tax:
  • The number of children you have fostered
  • Other sources of income e.g. part-time job
  • If you are receiving enhanced payments
  • If you are operating as a partnership in your tax obligations.
d4482728-8fa2-4267-9ba6-202593fe854b

Conclusion

Many factors will determine if you will pay tax. In general, your sources of income including foster care allowance should not be higher than the Qualifying Care Relief. If it goes above it, then you will have to pay tax.
Do you still have more questions? The UK Government link below will have more details. https://www.gov.uk/support-for-foster-parents/tax-arrangements

Stages of Becoming a Foster Carer in the UK

What are the process and the main stages of becoming a foster carer? All you need to know – from contacting a foster agency to fostering a child
Process and Stages for becoming a foster carer. A complete guide for first-time applicants
Fostering a child or a young person is one of the most life-changing decisions that you will ever make in your life. So, have you been recently thinking about fostering a young person? Well, today, we will help you unravel everything that you need to know about the process of becoming a foster carer in the United Kingdom.

Is it difficult to become a foster parent in the UK?

To begin with, we do not use the word “parent” when we refer to a foster carer, out of our full respect for the biological parents of a child. Foster carers can never play the same role as parents of a child; however, they can provide care and support, which is much needed by any child. Once you have a dedication to making a positive change in a child’s life, it isn’t difficult to become a foster carer; you simply need to understand the process you must go through. To help you get started, we will discuss the basic steps that you should follow.

Fostering Watford

Steps to becoming a foster parent in the UK

You should be reminded that these steps may vary a little bit depending on the agency that you choose to work with. However, here are the basic steps:

1. Initial enquiry. Contact an agency or local authority about your interest

You must first express your interest by contacting a local fostering agency or the local authority. This is your opportunity to chat with the local agency about any concerns that you may have since you have an interest in fostering a young person.

This step is also important, as it helps to identify whether or not you can meet the initial requirements for child fostering. For example, when you call us, we’ll ask about a spare bedroom for the child and any other special considerations that you may need based on the age of the young person you are fostering.

2. Attend an Information session

If you are a first-time fosterer, you will need initial training to learn the basics of the fostering requirements in the UK. On some occasions, an applicant might skip this stage.

3. Home visit. The initial assessment

After you have made inquiries about fostering a child, we’ll organise a home visit. It should take about 1-2 hours. During this time, we’ll share more details about your request to become a foster carer.
We will also engage with you about the options that you have. Based on our talk, you will decide if you will proceed with an application or drop your quest to become a foster carer.

4. Attend Skill To Foster Training - 3 days of training

At this stage, you will have a brief training lasting 3 days, where you will gain some basic skills on how to become a successful foster carer.

5. Form F assessment - 4 to 6 months

We will conduct a fostering assessment to evaluate your readiness and suitability to become a foster carer. During the assessment period, a social worker will come to your home a few times, interviewing members of your family and your referee. This time is dedicated to collaborative work with your accessor.
The social worker will then determine your suitability to become a foster carer based on the assessment done. If your application is approved, you will proceed to the next step, otherwise, you will get extensive advice on the next steps.

6. Panel Attendance with your assessor

At this stage, you attend panel with your assessor for the presentation of your assessment and your approval. When everything is set, you will be invited to attend a panel meeting with a group of professionals in fostering young children in the UK. The panel will interview you before recommending you as a possible foster carer.
You shouldn’t be worried about the panel meeting; it is less frightening than you might think. People who have gone through this step often say it was much easier than they thought.
